Last known letter written on Titanic sells for €145,000

THE last known letter to be written on the Titanic sold for stg£119,000 (€145,000) at auction yesterday. The letter was written by passenger Esther Hart just hours before the liner struck an iceberg in April 1912. The letter, headed 'On board Titanic' and written on Titanic stationery, comes complete with an envelope embossed with the White Star Line flag. The auction took place at Henry Aldridge and Son Auctioneers in Devizes, Wiltshire, England.

In the letter Mrs Hart, who was travelling with her daughter and well-known survivor Eva Hart, talks about being ill while on board the New York-bound liner.


An outdoor singles event known as 'Hot in the Hills' – "to take pressure from the present internet dating frenzy" – takes place in Dingle, Co Kerry, on May 10.
