Landing gear error lead to fatal crash

THE former sportswear heir and Powerscourt Estate owner Michael Slazenger died following a plane crash in which he did not realise the landing gear on his plane was down until after his aircraft struck a tree and exploded.

A final report on the fatal crash on April 10 last year, which also claimed the life of his 66-year-old friend Noel Whitney, shows his plane struck a tree which had been allowed to grow too large beside a private runway in the Wicklow Estate.

The two men had been on a leisure trip when Mr Slazenger had initiated a 'go-around' just before landing for an unknown reason. A 'go-around' is where a pilot makes another attempt at a landing.
