Labour's Higgins treated for injury

Labour TD Michael D Higgins is recovering in hospital after fracturing his kneecap when he fell during a visit to Colombia last week. He was among a group of public representatives on a Trocaire-organised visit when he slipped and had to receive medical treatment.

He continued with his itinerary with the aid of crutches and underwent an operation in a Galway hospital on his return.

Defence Forces seek sandbags

THE Defence Forces wants to buy 300,000 new heavy-duty polypropylene sandbags and 100,000 hessian ones. Suppliers have until November 17 to respond.

The Army used some 350,000 sandbags when it assisted local authorities in sandbagging during last winter's floods.

Cancer expert to give free talk

Members of the public are invited to a free public meeting in Dublin tomorrow night addressed by Dr Dennis Slamon, one of the world's leading cancer researchers whose work led to the development of the breakthrough drug Herceptin.

The meeting is at 7pm in the Herbert Park Hotel.
