Kick off the New Year with a good spring in your step

There's plenty of choice around the country to ensure the new year gets off to an uplifting start, says Lucinda O'Sullivan

New Year's Eve is emotional at the best of times, so make it a special night that will be remembered for life.

There are all sorts of excellent options all over the country, both in hotels and restaurants. In Dublin, Fitzpatrick's Castle in Killiney has a New Year's Eve party with a champagne reception and a six-course dinner followed by dancing to a jazz band. The cost is €85 per person. The Beacon Hotel in Sandyford has a great package at €180 for two people for New Year's Eve, which includes one night's accommodation with breakfast, a three-course dinner in the My Thai restaurant, with a DJ and dancing. For details,

The Portmarnock Hotel & Golf Links has New Year's Eve dinner and dancing for just €69 per person. And for €99pps you get the whole package plus you can stay the night in luxurious accommodation with breakfast. See

At Carton House in Maynooth, Co Kildare, there's a two-night break from €260pps, including a champagne reception on New Year's Eve and a sumptuous four-course dinner in The Linden Tree Restaurant. For details, visit

At the Druids Glen Resort in Co Wicklow, for €170pps, you can enjoy a five-course dinner with champagne and traditional Irish music in the Thirteenth Bar and B&B. See

Lots of restaurants also feature special menus. At the superb Ananda Indian Restaurant in Dundrum Town Centre, super-chef Sunil Ghai has a fabulous seven-course seafood-tasting menu at €50. See

Harvey Nichols has champagne on arrival, a three-course dinner, and you can take to the dance floor to welcome in 2011. Tickets are €80. See

Celestine's Brasserie in Donnycarney has a five-course New Year's Eve gala dinner for just €35. See

At The Pig's Ear on Nassau Street, Stephen McAllister and Andrea Hussey, promise a fantastic three-course New Year's Eve dinner with a glass of bubbly to start for €60 per person. See

At Roly's Bistro in Ballsbridge, a cracking New Year's Eve three-course dinner costs €65 including a glass of champagne to ring in the New Year. See

Town Bar & Grill in Dublin city centre has a normal menu priced at €23.95 and €29.95. Live music from 8.30pm. See

Fancy something exotic? The atmospheric Indonesian Chameleon Restaurant in Temple Bar has a New Year's Eve Rijst-tafel menu at €35 with a glass of bubbly. www.

Las Tapas in Cabinteely, Co Dublin, will welcome you Spanish style. Its range of tapas is priced from €2.95-€6.55.

At Rasam Indian Restaurant in Glasthule, Nisheeth Tak and chef Sanjay Vishwakarma are doing a four-course menu for €44.95. See

Conor Sexton and Conor Kilkenny are holding a New Year's Eve Party in aid of Unicef at their hip Koh restaurant on Jervis Street. Tickets cost €25. Kasturi Indian Restaurant in Lucan will have a live DJ until 4am, along with great food. See

At Il Divo Italian Restaurant in Rathgar, it will be an Italian 'Capodanno' with a five-course dinner for €35, music and prizes. See

In Cork, the River Lee Hotel's two-night package has a bottle of sparkling wine on arrival, five-course dinner on New Year's Eve, a champagne toast at midnight, and a late check-out at 2pm for €159pps. Visit

At the five-star Hayfield Manor, you can dress to impress for the New Year's Eve black-tie gala event. Tickets are €120 with one- and two-night packages from €228pps. See

Pat and Soizic Kiely's Les Gourmandises Restaurant on Cook Street have the usual two and three course menus but will also be open on Saturday evening, January 1, and on the Sunday for lunch only.

The White House's Restaurant d'Antibes in Kinsale, Co Cork, has a New Year's Eve value menu for €30, and a-la-carte from 6-10pm, followed by music in the bar. See

The Trident Hotel, also in Kinsale, promises a sumptuous five-course menu, and music in the bar of the Wharf Tavern. All for €45 per person.

Toddie's Restaurant at the Bulman in Summercove, will have seasonal specials. There will be live music from 10pm.

In Baltimore, Co Cork, at the Waterfront Hotel there are two-night B&B packages from €120 pps. See

Over in the Kingdom at the gorgeous Parknasilla Resort & Spa, the two-night New Year's Eve package includes a gala dinner, plus cocktails and entertainment in the Doolittle bar. In Killarney, Co Kerry, at Jackie Lavin and Bill Cullen's Muckross Park Hotel, they are doing things in style. Three-night packages from €395pps include a five-course dinner on New Year's Eve and dinner for two on another night in GB's fine dining restaurant.

At the Old Ground in Ennis, the two-night packages start at €165 and promise a buffet using the best of local Co Clare produce. See

The River Bistro in Limerick offers a four-course dinner for €40, with a glass of bubbly. See

Out in Lisdoonvarna, Co Clare, at the great Wild Honey Inn, Aidan and Kate McGrath will be serving dinner from 5pm-9pm and ringing in New Year beside their log fires with champagne and a singalong.

In Nenagh, Co Tipperary, at the Fairways Bar & Restaurant, there will be a five-course dinner at €50, plus champagne on arrival and live music.

In Galway, the hip G Hotel has a two-night break with dinner and celebrations from €340pps; and breakfast is served until 3pm on New Year's Day to ease you in to 2011. See

The cool Lisloughrey Lodge in Cong, Co Galway, is holding a canapes-and-cocktail reception followed by a six-course meal, bubbles and party: €145pps including B&B. New Year's Eve festivities only €75pps.

Out at Renvyle House, the emphasis is on New Year's Eve for all the family. Kids are fed at 5.30pm followed by a kids' disco. Adults will be pampered with a gala dinner dance and champagne: 2BB2D from €380pps.

At the Westport Plaza Hotel in Co Mayo, three nights' B&B with two dinners is €329pps and its sister hotel next door, the Castlecourt, has the same kind of package at €279 pps. There will be live entertainment in the Plaza Bar and Petie Joe's in the Castlecourt. See

At Westport's Knockranny House Hotel, two nights' B&B and New Year's Eve dinner is from €265 pps. See

In Belfast, it would be hard to top The Great Room Restaurant at the Merchant Hotel for sheer opulence, and they are doing two sittings on New Year's Eve: the first at 7pm with three courses and a glass of champagne on arrival at £49.50 (€60) per person, and the second sitting is at 9.30pm, with five courses and entertainment until late.

Bellinter House near Navan, Co Meath, has a two-night package with a five-course dinner on New Year's Eve, including live entertainment and bubbles at midnight from €259pps. For details, see
