Key James Reilly executive Tony O’Brien to run HSE
HEALTH Minister James Reilly today chose one of his key executives to take on the new job of running the Health Service Executive.
Tony O’ Brien, who currently heads the Special Delivery Unit in the Department of Health, is the new Director General designate of the HSE and will formally assume the position when legislation reorganising management will be passed later this year.
The current HSE chief executive Cathal Magee announced recently that he is stepping down from his post which will be abolished under the shake-up.
The post of Director General is being created instead while the rest of the top tier management team is also being overhauled and reduced.
Mr Magee will leave the HSE shortly and Mr O’Brien will take over as part of the transition.
The HSE is currently struggling with a €281m deficit and will have to implement major cuts in the coming months.
The Minister said:””The remainder of the year will be a very difficulty one for our health services given our very considerable financial problems .But let me be clear that those problems will be managed on the basis that services will only be affected as a last resort.”
