TAOISEACH Enda Kenny says the hike in health insurance policies is necessary to ensure older people are not “abandoned”.

The increase will amount to €130 for the average family and will affect the majority of the two million people who have medical cover.

The Government announced the an increaser in the levy imposed on all policies to ensure older people don’t have to pay more for health insurance than young people with the same level of cover.

Mr Kenny said the coalition was not going to “abandon older people to be manipulated by health insurance companies.”

The Taoiseach said there was no extra money coming into the Exchequer as a result of the move and it means extra credits are given to people over 65.

Fianna Fail leader Michael Martin said the price hike will result in more people dropping their health insurance policies.

“It is the Government’s policies that are driving the haemorrhage out of the system,” he said.
