Taoiseach Enda Kenny took some time out from the stresses and strains of running the country yesterday to raise the starter's flag for the Cannonball Run 2011.

Among the stars taking part was Boyzone's Shane Lynch. Showing off his black and white pick-up truck, motoring enthusiast Lynch drove one of 150 supercars that yesterday set off on the 2011 Cannonball route.

The event, in aid of the Barretstown children's cancer centre in Co Kildare, kicked off its nationwide tour for the third year running in Dublin's Merrion Square.

Over 100,000 spectators are expected to line the streets and watch the supercars and novelty vehicles complete a three-day tour of the country.

Lynch was joined by former Miss World Rosanna Davison, TV3 presenter Elaine Crowley and RTE presenter Kathryn Thomas for the occasion.

The run will visit Waterford City, Cork, Bunratty Castle in Clare, Kylemore Abbey in Connemara National Park, then on to Westport today before finishing in Kilkenny Castle tomorrow.

In the last two years Cannonball has raised over €235,000 for Barretstown to help rebuild the lives of children affected by cancer.
