Kenny expected to agree to a referendum on gay marriage

Foinnan Sheahan

TAOISEACH Enda Kenny is expected to agree to a referendum on gay marriage in the lifetime of the Government.

However, Mr Kenny will consult with Fine Gael backbenchers before making a decision.

His spokesman said the Taoiseach would "talk to" party TDs and senators over the next week.

The Cabinet will discuss the matter next week.

Although there is still uncertainty over the timing, the Coalition is understood to be ready to announce its approval in principle.

The referendum is likely to be held this time next year or early in 2015.
