Kavanagh Poetry Award for new writer
A PREVIOUSLY unpublished poet has won this year's Patrick Kavanagh Poetry Award and will see his name in print for the first time in today's Irish Independent.
Librarian at University College Cork John FitzGerald has been writing for just four years.
He said his "heart stopped" when he won the award.
"I've been a reader of poetry all my life. I got to the point where I felt I had something to write about," he said.
President Michael D Higgins presented Mr FitzGerald with the award at the Patrick Kavanagh Centre in Inniskeen, Co Monaghan, last night.
Judge Brian Lynch described him as "an outstanding talent, and one of the best young poets" in the country.
A selection of his poetry appears for the first time in today's Weekend Review magazine.
