An angler got more than he bargained for after he hooked two massive sixgill sharks off the coast of Clare in less than three hours.

Andy Griffith used a specialised rod and reel to catch the incredible creatures during a trip last week.

The sixgill sharks weighed a combined total of almost 2,600lbs.

Luke Aston of Carrigaholt Sea Angling said it was a remarkable feat. "He [Andy ] had one which we estimated at around 1,150lbs and another at around 1,400lbs. It was something truly exceptional, two sharks of over 1,000lbs on the same day is incredible," he said.

Mr Aston said the sharks were released back in to the water after they were caught.

UCD biologist and fisheries researcher Ed Farrell said the sixgill shark is among 35 species of shark which have been found in Irish waters.

Mr Farrell added they are more typically found in tropical and temperate climates.
