Joyce 'Ulysses' recording sells for $43,750

A RARE vinyl recording of James Joyce reading from 'Ulysses' has been snapped up at a New York auction for more than double its guide price – selling for $43,750 (€32,861).

The 12-inch acoustic recording is signed by Joyce and dated Paris, November 27, 1924. Printed on the label is the name Shakespeare and Company, with an address at Rue de l'Odeon.

It had been expected to sell for between $15,000 and $20,000 (€11,267-€15,000) at Sotheby's in New York. But it was bought by an anonymous bidder.

The rare collector's piece was the first pressing of only 20 copies of Joyce reading from the 'Aeolus' episode of the book and is the only known audio of the writer reading from his masterpiece.
