WORKERS at one of the country’s best-known building supply firms downed tools to pay a visit to the National Lottery’s HQ to pick up a check for just over €3m.

The 21 members of the syndicate from the Chadwick’s Builder Centre on Thomas Street, Dublin, will walk away with €140,000 after they walked away with the jackpot bonanza of €3,084,281.

Foreman Dave Hanley, who was charged with purchasing their golden ticket at the weekend, headed a group who left the busy building and plumbing supplies firm to pick up the giant cardboard cheque.

Amid whoops and hollars, the group revealed they were planning to splash-out on holidays, pay off mortgages and some of the younger members were hoping to get a foothold on the housing ladder.

Mr Hanley, who is from the Thomas Street area, revealed it was a near miss for the group as he had originally “made a bags” of purchasing the Lotto ticket. After he realised he had not purchased enough quick picks he returned to the Centra Store on Thomas Street with the remaining €60. It was the ticket he bought on the second trip to the shop that had turned out to be the lucky one.

“It is unbelievable. We were having a few pints in Baker’s (on Thomas Street) on Sunday night when I heard it was won next door,” he said, adding the manager of the shop, Jianfei Bi, told him it was a quick pick ticket.

“I thought to myself we’ve as much chance as anyone,” he said, adding he’d had a lucky “feeling” about the ticket.

First thing on Monday morning, he reached into the jacket pocket in work and brought them to the shop to check the tickets.

The members have been paying €10 each month into the work Lotto syndicate for the past 10-years.

The winning numbers for the jackpot were 13, 25, 26, 41, 42, 43 and the bonus number was 8.
