A rugby-obsessed teacher was left speechless after a group of Cork schoolchildren worked some elf-like festive magic - and got him a pair of Ireland star Peter O'Mahony's pyjamas.

The rugby player was so taken by how highly the youngsters thought of teacher Shane McCarthy that he included in the surprise gift a signed photograph.

Peter's pyjamas were then formally presented to the unsuspecting teacher by his thrilled students at Ovens National School in Co Cork.

A thrilled Shane admitted he couldn't have been more stunned than if he was tackled by the entire Irish front row.

The gift arose from a humorous tweet posted by Shane on November 17 in the wake of Ireland's victory over the All Blacks.

"I want Peter O'Mahony's pyjamas for Christmas," the primary school teacher joked.

Students at the school decided to do something about it as a Christmas surprise.

Abby Clifford and the 32 other school students told their parents and one of them remembered that Peter's father John was president of Cork Constitution.

"John was a gent and said to leave it with him," Abby's father Tim explained about the surprise.
