She may not have rode the winner but there were still plenty of cheers for Jessica O'Gara at the Curragh racecourse yesterday.

Jessica, the wife of former Ireland and Munster rugby star Ronan, was pipped at the post in the first leg of the Irish Injured Jockeys' Corinthian Challenge charity race series.

First place went to Lynne McLoughlin, from Baltinglass, Co Wicklow, who works as a rider for trainer Jessica Harrington.

Her nearest rival was Orla Donworth, on Six Silver Lane, while Tim Gredley, riding Zanjabeel, came third.

The Corinthian Challenge raises much- needed funds for Irish Injured Jockeys.

Each rider will aim to raise €10,000 through sponsorship and fundraising, with all proceeds going to the charity.

The second series is on September 16 at Gowran Park, Co Kilkenny.
