Japanese court to rule on whether Nicola Furlong accused can be tried an adult
A JAPANESE court is due to rule tomorrow on whether the suspected killer of Irish student Nicola Furlong will be tried as a juvenile or as an adult.
A four-hour hearing in a Tokyo court earlier today was attended by the accused, 19-year-old Richard Hinds, a musician from Memphis, Tennessee.
The Furlong family, from Curracloe, Co Wexford, were also present in court where they submitted victim impact statements.
Because of the seriousness of the crime, the hearing was established to decide whether it could be prosecuted in an adult court.
The difference is likely have an effect on any potential sentence as well as on public access to proceedings.
