James McCarthy and Jonathan Walters to start World Cup opener in Kazakhstan

JAMES McCarthy will make his first competitive start for Ireland in tomorrow’s Group C World Cup qualifier against Kazakhstan, in Astana.

Giovanni Trapattoni also confirmed that Jonathan Walters has been selected ahead of Kevin Doyle to partner Robbie Keane up front.

Sunderland ‘keeper Keiren Westwood starts in goal following Shay Given’s retirement while John O'Shea, Darren O'Dea, Sean St Ledger and Stephen Ward make up the back four.

McCarthy starts in a midfield alongside Glenn Whelan with Aiden McGeady and Simon Cox operating along the wings.
