Jail for ex-mayor's son in sex attack

A SON of a prominent politician was yesterday jailed for seven years for a sex attack during which he banged his victim's head off the ground and repeatedly punched her.

Brian Maher (25), of Clostoken, Loughrea, Co Galway, had pleaded guilty to the attack in October 2010. He is a son of FG's Michael Maher, who recently served as mayor of Galway.

Woman quizzed in nose-bite assault

A young woman was being questioned by gardai last night about a vicious assault outside a city centre pub during which the victim had part of her nose bitten off.

Detectives arrested the 21-year-old suspect after raiding a house at Ongar in Lucan, west Dublin, early yesterday morning in relation to the attack on Blanchardstown woman Aoife Flood (23).

Funeral Mass for slain journalist

THE funeral of former Irish Independent journalist Eugene Moloney will take place on Tuesday.

Mr Moloney died after sustaining a blow to the head in Dublin city centre last week. His remains will arrive at the Church of Our Lady Queen of Peace on Merrion Road on Monday at 5.30pm. Funeral Mass will be at 10am on Tuesday, followed by burial at St Mura's parish church in Fahan, Co Donegal, on Wednesday.

Tragic holiday OAP identified

A PENSIONER from Co Wicklow who drowned while on holiday in Spain was named last night as Andrew Doyle from Grangecon, who was in his 70s. Tragically, his 21-year-old grandnephew, Nick Keogh from Baltinglass, Co Wicklow, also drowned while on holiday in 2007.

Mr Keogh died after getting into difficulty while swimming in Alicante.

AIB shareholder ends sit-in at HQ

AN AIB shareholder ended an overnight sit-in protest at the bank's Ballsbridge HQ in Dublin yesterday when he agreed to leave voluntarily.

Paddy Kehoe refused to leave after attending the bank's AGM, when he said he did not get answers to questions he posed last year.

Council elects SF mayor in capital

SINN Fein was last night celebrating the election of its first mayor in Dublin since the War of Independence.

Councillor Cathal King was elected mayor of South Dublin County Council. In other mayoral elections, Fianna Fail councillor Pat Daly was elected unopposed as mayor of Clare.
