The damage caused in last week's double arson attack at Beech Park has been estimated at €80,000, while the council had already spent €51,000 on refurbishment works following another attack in 2010.

Abbey pension deficit

THE Abbey Theatre has shut down its pension scheme due to a deficit of almost €2m. The national theatre has admitted pension cuts are on the way for former Abbey actors and staff who have not yet reached retirement age.

It has emerged that the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht turned down a request for a pensions bailout from the theatre. Abbey director of finance Declan Cantwell said it had wound up the scheme.
