'It was all my mistake and I regret the hurt,' says Gorman
RTE News will not be reviewing its reporting guidelines despite reporting that David Ervine had died on Sunday night.
RTE's Northern editor Tommie Gorman, speaking live during Sunday's nine o'clock news, said that Mr Ervine had passed away after suffering a massive heart attack. He went on to give an overview of Mr Ervine's political life.
Newsreader Anne Doyle corrected the error later in the bulletin.
Mr Ervine (53) died yesterday afternoon.
A spokeswoman for RTE News said last night that the station took responsibility for the error but said there would be no review of procedure.
"The report was based on two independent sources who had informed the RTE Newsroom of Mr Ervine's death," the station said in a statement.
"RTE wishes to apologise sincerely for the distress which the broadcast has caused both to viewers and to Mr Irvine's family and friends."
Earlier yesterday, Mr Gorman said the report was his mistake.
"Normally, any contact I'd have in relation to the Progressive Unionist Party would be with David himself," he said. "But I received information at around half past eight from two reliable and genuine people that David had passed away.
"It was my error and of course I do feel regret [for] the hurt caused to people who care for David and his family in particular."
Other organisations also erroneously reported Mr Ervine's death.
