Could the race for the biggest spider spotted in Ireland be on again...?

It is every arachnophobe's nightmare - coming face to face with an eight-legged creature of this size while out and about.

This spider was spotted in Ringsend, Dublin, yesterday afternoon.

Mark Condren, who took the photograph, said he took the snap when he noticed the large spider resting on the bottom of a set of railings.

The spider is believed to be approximately four inches long.

There are more than 35,000 species of spiders worldwide but less than 1,000 of these are found in Ieland.

Clusters of hundreds of baby garden spiders have been intriguing people across Britain, who've been posting pictures on social media.

Most species of spiders found across Ireland are not considered dangerous and they rarely bite, although social media has allowed people to take part in the unofficial competition of finding Ireland's biggest spider.
