Ironman's firm wiped out in property crash

THE Ironman champion who has stunned the country with his fitness levels lost his business in the property crash.

Gerry Duffy told the the Irish Independent yesterday he had previously run a real estate business but it was "wiped" in the recession.

Mr Duffy (43) is resting after completing 10 gruelling Ironman triathlons in just 10 days at the weekend.

His story of shedding four stone and quitting cigarettes as he turned his health around has captured the public's imagination.

But the triathlete fell on tough times when his business went to the wall. "I went back to college, I studied part-time. You have two choices: you can dwell on it or you can decide not to," he said.

Mr Duffy now gives motivational talks to companies and Leaving Certificate students.
