Irishman says he's up for life on Mars

AN IRISH astrophysicist is hoping to join a trip to Mars in 2024, with no return ticket.

Dr Joseph Roche, from Kildare, has been shortlisted to take part in the priva-tely funded Mars One project.

It aims to create a permanent human settlement on the red planet, with plans for crews to depart every two years from 2024.

Speaking on RTÉ's 'Morning Ireland', Dr Roche said that he dreamed of going to space while growing up on a small farm in Kildare.

The researcher at the Science Gallery at Trinity College Dublin said it was a "no brainer" even though there might be no way of coming back.
