AN IRISHMAN is recovering in hospital in Ibiza after being stabbed when he tried to break up a fight.

Darren Higgins (21) was slashed in the head, arms and stomach just before 4am on Saturday morning after rugby-tackling a man who was attacking another holidaymaker in the party resort of San Antonio.

He underwent an emergency operation for wounds that included a 20-centimetre cut to his stomach after being rushed to a nearby accident and emergency unit.

Speaking yesterday from Ibiza's Can Misses Hospital, Darren, originally from Kildare but living in Ibiza for the summer, said: "It was all a bit of a blur. Instinct just took over.

"I remember rugby-tackling the guy and then feeling what I thought was a blow to the back of my head until I realised there was blood pouring from it.

"I went to put my T-shirt round my head to stem the flow of blood and that's when he slashed my stomach.

"To be honest, I don't think it's sunk in yet how lucky I've been. I was just trying to do the right thing and stop a fight."
