Irish travelling to UK warned to be vigilant

Allison Bray

THE Department of Foreign Affairs took the unusual step yesterday of issuing a warning for any Irish people living in the UK or travelling there after rioting escalated in London and other cities.

It is the first time the Government has issued a warning over civil unrest in the UK, although there have been warnings about adverse weather conditions.

As rioting spread to other major centres yesterday, including Liverpool, Bristol and Birmingham, the department posted a notice on its website advising Irish nationals to be vigilant.

People living in or planning to travel to certain areas were warned to be particularly careful.

While stopping short of a issuing an alert advising against travel to the UK, the department advised travellers "to avoid areas where civil unrest is occurring and follow any instructions issued by the police and local authorities".

An estimated one million Irish-born citizens living in the UK were advised "to be vigilant and monitor local media for current information and follow the advice of local authorities".
