Tom Worden

AN Irish tourist has told police she was subjected to a terrifying sex attack in her holiday apartment in Tenerife.

The 20-year-old said she was assaulted by a British man while sleeping on the sofa after a night out with a friend. Police arrested a 26-year-old man who was sharing the flat with her in the party resort of Playa de las Americas.

The Irish woman arrived back at the apartment at 6am on Wednesday after a night out with a female friend.

She fell asleep fully clothed on the sofa but woke to find she had been stripped from the waist down.

One local report said she found her flatmate on top of her carrying out the sex attack.

The alleged victim was taken to hospital where she was examined by doctors.

The suspect, who works in a nightclub in the resort, was arrested and has been questioned by an investigating magistrate. He has not been charged with any offence.

A spokeswoman for the National Police in Tenerife said: "We are investigating the allegation and cannot say any more at this stage."
