An Irish toddler has died while on a family holiday in the Maldives.

Max Musgrave (2) drowned in a private pool in one of the luxury resorts in the Indian Ocean.

Parents Tara and Trevor Musgrave, who are well known on Dublin's social scene, are said to be "absolutely devastated" in the wake of the tragedy, which happened on Monday.

Mr Musgrave, from Castleknock, and his Malahide-born wife, who works in fashion, were at the exclusive Huvafen Fushi resort with their three children when the accident happened.

This is the second time an Irish person has drowned in the Maldives in the space of a week, after Dubliner Andrew Roddy (30) lost his life while swimming on honeymoon with his wife Gill.

It is understood Max, who had two older sisters, vanished about 6pm on Monday and the alarm was raised immediately. He was found shortly afterwards in a private pool in one of the villas on the island and attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.

A source close to the family said: "It's just devastating. It's just every family's worst nightmare.

"Trevor would have been very well known on the social scene and was a regular in places like Lillie's Bordello over the years. He's a really outgoing guy, really charming and full of chat - the classic car salesman. Tara is a little quieter but did a lot of brilliant work with organisations like the ISPCC, helping them fundraise over the years.

"Everyone's thoughts and prayers are with them. It's just unimaginable what they must be going through."

A Department of Foreign Affairs spokesman said: "We offered to give consular assistance and the offer remains open."

A Maldives police spokesman said last night an investigation into the tragedy was ongoing.

A spokesperson for the resort declined to comment last night, stating the police investigation was still under way.

Mr Musgrave owns a luxury car dealership called Onyx. The family were thought to be based in the UK in recent years.

The couple first met at a function in the Polo Club in the Phoenix Park back in 2008 and had their wedding reception in the K Club in 2011.
