Irish Independent appointments

Cormac Bourke has been appointed news editor with the Irish Independent.

A native of Athy, Co Kildare, he joined the paper in 2007 and previously held the role of assistant editor (news).

He was also deputy news editor of the 'Irish Daily Star' and worked for the 'Dublin Daily' and 'Ireland on Sunday' where he also held the position of health correspondent.

A former young medical journalist of the year, he holds a BA in journalism from Dublin City University.

Gareth Morgan has been appointed deputy news editor with the Irish Independent. Gareth joined the newspaper in 2007 and previously held the role of assistant news editor. He has also worked extensively on the Irish Independent picture desk.

Originally from Ammanford in west Wales, he worked in Welsh newspapers the 'Cambrian News' and the 'Western Mail' where he held the position of deputy news editor.

He is a former 'Western Mail' young journalist of the year, and holds a postgraduate diploma in journalism from Cardiff University, and a BA in history from the University of York.
