Senior US Treasury officials have met Fine Gael TD John Deasy as hopes grow of a deal to save hundreds of jobs at Aughinish Alumina in Co Limerick.

Mr Deasy, Ireland's special envoy to the US for undocumented immigrants, held talks with the officials in Washington DC yesterday.

It came weeks after the Government raised the fate of the Russian-owned facility directly with Kevin Hassett, the chief economist to the White House, when he visited Dublin.

The future of Aughinish has been in doubt since last April when the US imposed sanctions on Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska, whose EN+ group owns 48pc of Rusal, Aughinish's owner.
