Ireland's 'Hurt Locker' squad honoured

Don Lavery

IRELAND'S own Hurt Locker squad -- the secretive Army bomb disposal unit -- has been given a national courage award for its work in defusing terrorist bombs at home and overseas for 40 years.

The National Courage Award was last night given to the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit at the Irish Security Industry Awards (ISIA) in Dublin.

The citation said: "For over 40 years they have been at the eye of the security storm and yet few of us know much about them.

"They have defused bombs at home and overseas and set international standards in the study of defusing explosives used by terrorists. And regrettably their work must continue as we have still not reached a stage where all on the island have been brought into the peace process."

The unit, whose members are not identified by the media for security reasons, is recognised worldwide for its expertise in dealing with terrorist devices during the Troubles.
