There is good news ahead on the weather front, with the mercury expected to hit 16 degrees on Sunday – making Ireland hotter than Madrid.

For anyone who started the weekend early it is expected to be a dry day ahead with sunny spells. Some areas around the country are set for "unbroken sunshine" according to the National Forecaster.

Temperatures are expected to reach between 9 and 13 degrees today and will be coolest along the east coast.

Tomorrow is also expected to be dry with temperatures of up to 16 degrees, with a light breeze.

It will be cooler on the east coast however with mercury only reaching nine or ten degrees.

The sunshine will continue on Sunday with temperatures between 14 and 16 degrees.

The balmy temperatures will make Ireland warmer (and drier) than Spanish capital Madrid where rain and cooler temperatures are expected over the weekend.

Rain is expected to return on Monday but only in the southwest of the country. Elsewhere the dry sunny conditions are due to continue.
