COLOURFUL Independent TD Mick Wallace has been called many names this week -- but the latest is the mild title of 'football commentator' in a brief appearance on a German television channel.

Mr Wallace has been under immense pressure as he faced a huge backlash against a false declaration of VAT and an unpaid €2.1m tax bill.

But the football-loving deputy was spotted on the German television station ZDF happily giving his verdict on prospects for the boys in green.

Set against a backdrop of his trademark pink Wexford Youths Football Club banner, the T-shirt wearing deputy was heralded as a football commentator.

"They are decent but they are not wonderful," came the verdict of Mr Wallace. "Technically they probably leave a lot to be desired but Trap has done a good job, he's moulded them to a solid unit. They are very difficult to play against. There is a good morale there."

The short one minute-and-45-second clip aired on television yesterday.
