Investigations launched after woman attacked by cow dies

An investigation is underway after a woman was killed by a cow, the sixth farm related death recorded so far this year.

The woman, named locally as Teresa McNally, died in hospital last Wednesday after she was seriously injured when attacked by a cow on a farm in Clontibret, Co Monaghan.

It is understood that the 63-year-old was hurt by the cow after it had given birth to a calf.

The incident took place last Tuesday morning, May 19.

The Health and Safety Authority confirmed to that they were investigating the death of the woman. She died in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.

A HSA spokesperson said the authority had only learn of the incident yesterday, adding it was still not clear why it took gardai almost five days to report the women’s death.

“We were only told about the attack yesterday afternoon, so we’ve very little details about what happened. An investigation has now been opened.” he added.

The death of Ms McNally brings to six the number of people killed in farm related accidents so far this year.

Last weekend, a two-year-old was killed in Cork when a steel gate at his family’s equestrian centre in Goleen came loose and fell on him.
