Gardaí have launched an investigation after a body part was washed up on a west Co Donegal beach.

The limb, believed to be a part of a leg, was found washed up in the Gaoth Dobhair area.

It is understood the leg was found by a walker at Bunbeg Beach.

A Garda spokesperson confirmed that searches are now being made in the surrounding area.

It is understood an aerial search of the area took place yesterday afternoon.

The area has been cordoned off and a full investigation has been launched into the circumstances surrounding the find.

"Gardaí and the Coast Guard are currently carrying out searches along the coastline following the discovery of human remains on Bunbeg Beach, Donegal," the Garda spokesman said.

"Investigations are ongoing," he added.
