Intelligence operation leads to massive €1m drugs seizure

A DRUGS gang was left reeling last night after an intelligence-led operation involving customs officers and gardai resulted in the seizure of drugs worth nearly €1m. Two men were arrested.

The massive shipment of 75kg of herbal cannabis was doomed even before it landed in Dublin Port. The combined operation involved Customs, the Garda National Drugs Unit and officers from Tallaght and Store Street stations.

It is believed investigators knew the huge haul was on its way to Dublin. When it arrived it was put under surveillance.

The shipment was then tailed as it made its way across the city to Rathcoole. At about 3.20pm customs officers and gardai raided a house and recovered cannabis worth about €900,000.

About 10,000 tablets -- believed to be ecstasy -- were also discovered in the house. Two Dublin men, aged 49 and 34, were arrested. They are being held at Clondalkin garda station.
