TWO probes are under way into the death of a Mountjoy prisoner over the weekend.

John Bishop (26), from St Ronan's Drive in Clondalkin, was found hanging in his cell.

He is the third prisoner to die from suspected suicide this year.

A spokesman for the Irish Prison Service said gardai were called to Mountjoy Prison at 2.25am after Bishop's body was discovered.

He was in a single cell, and he was alone when he died.

"The gardai were called and were present," he said. "They will investigate, and the cause of death will be determined by the coroner's court."

A separate investigation will be carried out by the Prison Service.

The father of four was serving a three-and-a-half year sentence after going on a rampage in July 2010 where he stole cigarettes, alcohol and money from a Co Dublin service station before driving at high speed along the N7 and ramming a garda car, causing €4,500 worth of damage. He pleaded guilty at his trial last May.
