Ireland rugby star Tommy Bowe (33) has opened up about tackling first-time fatherhood with his former Miss Wales wife Lucy Whitehouse.

Bowe was just 40 seconds into the Six Nations clash against Wales last month when he sustained a serious injury resulting in a fractured ankle.

The Ulster winger said while the injury was devastating, it meant lots of quality time with his new-born baby girl Emma, who is now 10 days old.

"The injury is a tough thing to have happened but it happened at a nice time. I'm able to spend a lot of time at home now and I'm not going to be away in the summer on tour," he said.

"I've had a lot of injuries and it's something Lucy always says, 'it happens for a reason' and things generally fall into place. So that's a nice way to look at it."

He said that fatherhood was a "fantastic" feeling: "It's such a surreal experience in general, but wonderful."

While sustaining yet another injury might have other players his age considering their next move, he said he was nowhere near ready to hang up his rugby boots. Bowe was in Dublin yesterday to launch Subway's BBQ beef burnt-ends sandwich.
