Fianna Fail leader Micheal Martin claims there were a number of cases of abuse within the Republican movement of Sinn Fein and the IRA, which were covered up.
In the wake of the sentencing of Gerry Adams’s brother, Liam, to 16 years for abuse of his daughter, Mr Martin said other cases were dealt with “internally”.
Mr Martin compared the Republican movement to the Catholic church in the way cases of abuse were covered up and not reported to the authorities.
The Fianna Fail leader said Mr Adams still has questions to answer about the failure to report the abuse by his own brother.
“This may have been a broader trend within the Republican movement,” he said.
Mr Martin said he has been notified of other allegations of abuse within the Republican movement, where “attempts were made to deal with these cases internally”.
