Irish Independent journalist Conor McCrave has won a top award for a series of articles on foster and residential care.

Conor, a DCU journalism graduate, scooped the top prize at the Press Council of Ireland Bursary Awards 2018.

He said the point of the articles was to "shine a light on a part of society people don't really know about".

"People who come from vulnerable backgrounds need help and support and the articles shine a light on that perspective," he said.

"The recognition is great, a lot of credit goes to the people who told me their stories and that spoke to me for the articles."

He added: "The Press Council of Ireland is endorsed by the whole industry and it's great for those features to be acknowledged."
