In tents devotion Catholic youth ready for holy festival

A THREE-DAY festival of faith and fellowship began last night for youth from around Ireland.

About 1,000 young Catholics are expected to descend on Ireland's Marian Shrine for the Oxegen-style camping festival this weekend.

Entitled 'Walk by Faith', the gathering at the Shrine of Our Lady of Knock will include talks, workshops, prayer, reflection and music.

Archbishop Michael Neary of Tuam and Bishop Christopher Jones of Elphin will take part in the event.

Among the key speakers is Sr Helen Prejean, who wrote the book that was turned into the box-office movie 'Dead Man Walking' starring Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn. Theological talks with eminent Catholic thinkers, prayer workshops, candlelit processions and healing ceremonies will fill out the bill.

Organisers have said they hoped those who attended would return home to pass "the torch of faith among their peers".
