In brief: Security guard hero foils bank raid
A SECURITY guard was hailed a hero yesterday after foiling an attempted armed robbery.
The G4S Security employee fought off two masked raiders armed with a shotgun and a sledge-hammer after they ambushed him in a Bank of Ireland branch in Cork.
The raiders eventually fled after abandoning the robbery attempt at 10.20am at the bank in Glanmire, near Hazelwood Shopping Centre. The incident occurred as the guard was carrying a cash box between his security vehicle and the bank branch.
Immediately after the security guard entered the bank to make a delivery, he was ambushed by the two balaclava-wearing raiders.
They threatened the official and tried to grab the cash box but he refused to let go of the box and struggled with the two desperate raiders before they fled.
Gardai last night paid tribute to the guard's courage. "This man was very brave indeed," one garda said.
"It is company policy not to comment on situations like this but we are delighted that our employee is safe," a G4S official added last night.
