In Brief: Gardai seize heroin

Gardai have seized half a kilo of heroin with a street value of €75,000 after stopping and searching a car at Lyster Street in Athlone.

Officers made the seizure shortly yesterday and arrested a 25-year-old woman. During a follow-up search of a house at Goldsmith Avenue in the town a 29-year-old man was also detained.

Quinns' bid fails

A COURT cross-examination of the children of jailed businessman Sean Quinn concerning their assets will go ahead next month. It follows the rejection yesterday by the Supreme Court of an application by the Quinns for a stay on the questioning.

Martin Hayden SC, for the Quinns, applied for the stay pending the hearing of the family's Supreme Court appeal against the order of Mr Justice Peter Kelly directing their cross-examination on January 24 and 25 next.

Young robber jailed

A YOUNG man with 113 previous convictions has been given a seven-year sentence for robbery.

Kenneth Locke (23) of Ramillies Road, Ballyfermot, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to robberies at a Londis on September 8, 2011, and Sarsfield Service Station on January 21, 2012. Judge Patrick McCartan imposed concurrent sentences totalling seven years and suspended the final three years.

Youths sent for trial

THREE youths have been returned for trial in the Circuit Court in the new year over an attack on a young man at the Dublin City University campus in February.

The three boys, two aged 16 and one 17-year-old, had been charged at the Children's Court in Dublin in connection with the attack on the 20-year-old man. They are accused of assault causing harm and violent disorder.

Abuser in no show

A child abuser facing sentence for molesting his five-year-old nephew has fled before he could be sentenced.

The 51-year-old faced up to 10 years in prison when he was due to be sentenced yesterday at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. He had pleaded guilty to indecent assault in 1983. Judge Martin Nolan issued a bench warrant for his arrest.

Drug accused in court

ONE of eight men arrested following the discovery of growhouses appeared before Gorey District Court. Khai Siang Angl, of Main St, Campile, Co Wexford, faced a charge of possessing cannabis for sale or supply.

Mr Angl was remanded in custody to appear before Wexford Court on January 2.
