In brief: Gardai launch probe after body of young man is discovered in Arklow

The gardai in Arklow have launched an inquiry into the death of a young man following the discovery of his body in a house in the harbour road area of the town. The man, in his early 20s, was not the tenant of the house.

The body was taken to Loughlinstown Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Ireland draw Germany for Brazil 2014

THE Republic of Ireland were last night drawn in Group C with Germany, Sweden, Austria, Kazakhstan and the Faroe Islands (managed by former Irish manager Brian Kerr) for the qualification stage of the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Qualifying games begin in September 2012.

Swimmers take plunge for charity

OVER 300 swimmers dived into the River Lee in Cork city yesterday for the annual Lee Swim. The event raises money for various charities around the city. Organisers are hoping to exceed last year's total of €10,000.

THE deputy leader of the SDLP is expected to announce his challenge for the leadership of the party this week. Sources close to assemblyman Patsy McGlone say he intends to make an announcement this week.
