Michael Healy-Rae said he has escaped death for a second time after he 'choked badly' on his dinner.

The Kerry Independent TD said he was left 'in shock' last Saturday when he was rushing through his dinner and choked.

"It was around this time last year the other incident happened. It must be a bad time of year for me," Mr Healy-Rae told Radio Kerry.

"I was rushing as usual. I was wolfing down my dinner and the next thing I started to choke on my chicken.

"Right away I knew it wasn't good. My wife Eileen was out at the clothes line so I walked out to her and I put up my hand and she realised that something was wrong."

Mr Healy Rae told Radio Kerry that he was able to get some air, but not enough.

"I knew I was badly choking. The neighbours came over and began to do the Heimlich maneuver.

"Unfortunately despite their best efforts, it wasn't working. They brought out a glass of water but every bit of it came back up again. I knew if water couldn't get down, I wasn't getting enough air."

An ambulance was called to assist after Mr Healy-Rae turned purple.

"My lips and hands turned purple. I knew it wasn't good.

"The woman once again died the Heimlich maneuver and I jammed my two fingers as far down my throat as I could. I started to get air in again and I then knew I wasn't going to die."

He said that people should take more time to enjoy their meals as rushing can lead to incidents.

"People should realise how stupid we are to be rushing when we eat. Trying to save time when we're eating isn't very smart. Think about how easy it is for something to go wrong and people should slow down when eating because it could go horribly wrong.

"If I was home alone, there's a thin line between living and dying."

Mr Healy-Rae said he tried to stay calm but he thought "janey mac, that was a tight one".

The Kerry Independent TD also cheated death this time last year on his family farm when he was attacked by a cow.

"I'm like a cat with nine lives," he said.
