Gardaí have launched an investigation after a gay couple claimed that their pet chihuahua was beheaded.

Kieran Keogh and his partner Andy say they are devastated after they found their dog 'Mousey' in two parts in the back garden of their home in Rathdrum, Co Wicklow.

Mr Keogh discovered the body of the animal, which he says was given to him as a gift by his mother.

After returning home, he became suspicious after 'Mousey' failed to greet him, as was the norm.

Mr Keogh said one of his other dogs then alerted him to Mousey's body in the back garden.

A number of days later, the pet's head was left on the back doorstep.

"I'm absolutely sick to the stomach. What fool would ever do such a thing?" Mr Keogh asked last night.

Gardaí in Ashford and Rathdrum are investigating the incident. Officers are due to visit the couple today and will seek access to their garden, where the dog's remains are buried.

Gardaí have already spoken to Mr Keogh.

They are investigating a number of lines of inquiry in terms of potential motives for the alleged beheading.

Mr Keogh says he does not know why anyone in the area would carry out such an act.

"I have no grievances with anyone at all. All I do is go about my business," he said.

Mr Keogh, who owns a number of dogs, says he has not been able to sleep, adding: "I just want justice at this stage."
