'I'd probably be dead if I waited for cancer assessment'

A woman who has just completed treatment for breast cancer only received a HSE hospital appointment letter this week - 10 months after she decided to pay for private treatment.

Angela Dobbs Gordon (38) said she'd "probably be dead" if she hadn't taken matters into her own hands after she discovered a lump. Ms Gordon, from Enniscorthy, Co Wexford, contacted her GP who arranged an appointment with the breast care department at University Hospital Waterford in April 2018.

But she became so concerned the appointment was taking time that she decided to go for a private consultation, ultrasound and mammogram. She was subsequently diagnosed with cancer and underwent an operation, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Just this week, she received a letter asking if she still needed to attend for her "initial outpatient consultation".
