A driver has spoken of his horror after being kicked in the face by a cyclist after slowing down in traffic.

A listener called Shaun called into RTÉ's Liveline to share his horror road rage attack.

"I was driving on the dual carriageway in Swords about 50 metres from my work. I had loads of spare time and the traffic was slow-moving so I slowed down to let a car pull in front of me," Shaun said.

He said he heard a thud on his car from behind and was suddenly attacked by a cyclist.

"I heard a thud on my car and the next thing I knew the passenger door flung open and somebody with very long legs stuck their leg in and kicked me in the face.

"I was stuck in the seatbelt in two lanes of traffic which wasn’t moving. I was in shock just watching this guy cycle off after assaulting me.

"I only slowed down to let somebody into the lane and there was a thud."

Shaun said he alerted gardai of the incident but was told if he had no witnesses there was little they could do.

"He just opened the passenger door, held the top of my car and he kicked me. He must have been at least 6ft2.

"I usually tell my wife to keep her door closed at traffic lights. I never thought myself in Swords that this would happen. From now on, I’m driving with my doors locked."

Shaun said there was no damage done to his car but that the incident was "totally uncalled for, crazy behaviour".
