Husband falls 30 feet into lake

A 22-year-old man was recovering in hospital last night after he fell almost 30 feet from a railing into a lake in Killaloe, Co Clare, as his wife watched in horror.

Rescuers believe the man was lucky not to have landed on the remains of an old jetty and was only saved by hanging on to the wood until rescue crews arrived.

Parents to donate Manuela funds

The parents of Manuela Riedo, the teenage Swiss student murdered in Galway in 2007, are expected to travel to Ireland this weekend to outline plans for almost €50,000 raised at a concert in her memory.

Hans Peter and Arlette Riedo have indicated that their wish is for the money to be spent on deserving causes aimed at protecting vulnerable young women.

No bail for toilet rape accused

A MAN charged with the rape of a young mother at the Church Street public toilets in Kanturk, Co Cork, on March 9 was refused bail yesterday after being described by gardai as posing a flight risk.

The 35-year-old Polish national appeared before Kanturk District Court on remand. Judge Michael Pattwell remanded the man to appear before Mallow District Court next Wednesday.
