The HSE spent more than €100,000 on its 10-day recruitment drive for junior doctors in India and Pakistan.

The 36-member team, made up of consultants, management and administrative staff, spent nearly €1,000 a day on meals during the mission to recruit doctors to work here.

The overall bill for the 10-day visit in early May came to €113,768, the 'Medical Independent' revealed. They spent €37,866 on flights, €9,913 on meals, and a further €21,008 on hiring meeting rooms and business centres. Accommodation and transfers for the stay cost €44,913.

The HSE said that it paid economy rates for the flights, while "consultants who wished to travel business class (were) required to meet the additional cost themselves".

The mission led to nearly 4,000 applicants responding to the HSE's initial advertisements in Pakistan and India.
