Howlin: Budget adjustment to be decided within next week

Michael Brennan, Deputy Political Editor

PUBLIC Expenditure Minister Brendan Howlin has signalled that the Government will make a decision on reducing the €3.1bn Budget target at next week's meeting.

He said that he, Finance Minister Michael Noonan and the Government as a whole would be crunching the numbers to determine what the final figures would be.

"We'll make a presentation, I would imagine in the next week or so, in relation to the overarching shape of the Budget," he said.

The Government is set to get further information on the state of the economy this week with the publication of the national accounts on Thursday for the second quarter of this year.
