How phone users can opt out
TELEPHONE users can opt out of receiving cold calls or unsolicited calls from companies.
Some 1.16 million landline users have already registered with the National Directory Database, which allows them avoid unwanted calls, according to the latest figures from Comreg.
Consumers should contact their landline provider to register this preference, while ex-directory customers are automatically placed in the database to opt out.
This will block direct marketing calls but it is still legal for companies to contact consumers to take part in surveys. Customers of a business may also be contacted for marketing purposes if they have agreed to this.
Anyone who receives a marketing call more than 28 days after registering to opt out can contact the Data Protection Commissioner. They can be contacted on 057 8684800 or 1890 252231, at info@ dataprotection.ie or at Canal House, Station Rd, Portarlington, Co Laois.
